Xiaomi is taking the fight to OnePlus. Hours after OnePlus launched its first true-blue ‘flagship’ OnePlus 7 Pro (alongside the vanilla OnePlus 7 and OnePlus Bullets Wireless 2), Xiaomi has announced that its Redmi K20 ‘flagship killer’ is coming soon to India. Although no tentative time frame has been mentioned, the reveal seems more like a teaser trailer to stay tuned for more, and there are a couple of different ways to look at it.
The teaser image shared by Xiaomi India’s Redmi handle keeps things simple – flagship killer 2.0 is coming, is what it says. Redmi has played around with the color scheme in the teaser image to state the obvious – the phone is question is the Redmi K20. The Redmi K20 has already been announced in China and is part of Redmi’s all-new performance driven K-series of phones that will be all about ‘killer’ specs. Case in point, the Redmi K20 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor – which is also the same processor that powers the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro phones. The teaser image shared by Redmi India re-confirms the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 bit.
Now, here’s where things start to get interesting. The teaser has been reshared by C Manmohan, who is general manager for Poco India, wherein he subtly hints that the “flagship killer 2.0 is coming” was supposed to be his line. Since the original Poco F1 was also marketed as a flagship killer designed to take on the OnePlus 6, talk of a flagship killer 2.0, invariably hints at a certain Poco F2. Now, even though the teaser has been shared by Redmi India (and not Poco India), speculation is rife that the Poco F2 is (also) possibly coming soon to India.
Which won’t be a surprise since Redmi is said to be working on not one, but two flagship phones and one of them could end up becoming the Poco F2 for India. That phone may be called the Redmi K20 Pro (in China), but because Redmi is yet to confirm the existence of such a product, we suggest you take this piece of information with a pinch of salt.
Whatever be the case, Xiaomi is gearing to launch a Redmi flagship phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor inside in India in the days to come which is reason enough to be excited. This is because even though Redmi is now an independent sub-brand of Xiaomi, it is still sticking to its roots - new-age Redmi phones still focus on bringing high-end specs at affordable prices.
Redmi chief Lu Weibing has been dropping Easter eggs with regards to its Redmi Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship phone on social media for some time now. The phone will be optimized for gaming and boast of two-day battery life. The K20 will be also eligible for Android Q beta at launch which means early adopters will be able to try out Google’s latest and greatest software on it alongside Pixel users.
